The document that starts court proceedings. It sets out the facts relied on, the negligence alleged and the damages claimed.
A statement of claim is filed in court and served on the defendant, who files a defence in reply. Together these pleadings define what is in dispute. Filing does not end negotiation; many claims settle after proceedings start and before a hearing.
