A percentage rating of the permanent effect of an injury on the body as a whole, assessed by a trained doctor against a published guide.
Whole person impairment, or WPI, converts a permanent injury into a percentage so that different injuries can be compared on one scale. It is assessed once the condition has stabilised. In many schemes it acts as a gateway: whether certain heads of damage or a common law claim are available depends on reaching a threshold.
