An amount repaid from a settlement to a government body that funded treatment or paid benefits, such as Medicare or Centrelink.
Before a settlement is paid out, Medicare is told of the claim and issues a notice of charge for the treatment it funded, and Centrelink advises any benefits that must be repaid. These refunds come out of the settlement sum. The lawyer handling the claim manages the notices; the injured person does not pay them separately.
