The date from which the insurer assesses when the member first became disabled.
The date of disablement is the date on which the policy’s TPD definition is treated as satisfied. This is often the date a waiting or qualifying period ends, rather than simply the date the person stopped work. It typically determines whether cover was in force at the relevant time, and is usually the reference point from which the insurer assesses whether the person is unlikely ever to return to work. Where a person stopped work some time ago, correctly establishing this date is one of the first tasks in the claim.
